It would be interesting to come up with a list of streets and other landmarks named after people who played a significant role in Singapore before 1965? Below is a shortlist:

Streets:
- Eu Tong Sen
- Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim

Schools:
- Gan Eng Seng
- Raffles

Hospitals:
- Tan Tock Seng

Used to do internships in the Tanjong Pagar/Raffles Place area, a lot of the street names there are named after people. I can contribute a few too!

Places:
- Ann Siang Hill (Named after Chew Ann Siang, merchant and sawmill owner)

Streets:
- Boon Tat Street (near Lau Par Sat!)
- Anson Road
- Shenton way

Both "Anson" and "Shenton" were the first names of ex-Strait settlement governors, I think! Let's keep this thread going!

I found more street names!  Idea

Chitty Road - named after the Chitty Melaka or the Peranakan Indian community who migrated from Malacca to Singapore during the late 191h century and settled in the "little India" area.

D'Almeida Street - one of the oldest streets in Singapore named after Dr Jose D'Almeida who was a surgeon in the Portuguese navy who came to Singapore in 1825.

Kim Seng Road - named after Tan Kim Seng who is a respected community leader and public benefactor who bore the cost of building the road in the early 1860s.

Alkaff Avenue - named after the Alkaff family of Arab traders and landowners in Singapore.

Whampoa Road - stretched from Kim Keat Road and ended at Whampoa Square, this road is named after Hoo Ah Koay, a prominent entrepreneur and public servant, who was popularly known as Whampoa.

Jiak Kim Street - Tan Jiak Kim is renowned for his service to the government and community.

Nee Soon Road - named after Lim Nee Soon in the 1950, he was a Justice of the Peace and a member of the Rural Board.

There's also a market named after someone famous of the past. There was Simon Road Market which existed in the period of 1948 to 1999. It was also fondly known as “ow gang lark kok jio” (Hougang sixth milestone).

This road was named after prominent Eurasian of Portuguese descent Simon Aroozoo (1850-1931) (who also had the nearby Aroozoo Avenue named after him). Unfortunately when it was first built there was a poor response from the public. Publicity efforts were necessary to improve it's visitorship.

Soon after Simon Road Market became a place of gathering for vegetable farmers from Potong Pasir and fishermen from Kangkar and Serangoon River to sell off their goods in the morning. When the night falls in, the market would later become a makan haven, serving delicious Hokkien mee, muah chee, pork congee, wanton mee and mee rebus.

Here's the website with more information about the Hawker Centres in Singapore. Not all from before 1965 though. http://remembersingapore.wordpress.com/2012/08/27/singapores-vanished-markets-and-hawker-centres/

I would suggest the book Singapore Street Names: A Study of Toponymics. It explains succinctly, the reasons behind each street.

Like energizerbunny mentioned there are places other than streets which were named after famous people.

The entire area of Chong Pang was named after Lim Chong Pang, a prominent businessman and long-time member of the Singapore Rural Board (a governmental body dealing with municipal issues such as water supply, markets and building inspections).
